Written Analysis of devising in the physical theatre style of Rash Dash

This is my first ever time that I had ever heard of this physical theatre style and exploring this so it was quite a new experience for me. The way that they come about creating a piece from just a simple idea of over under through to me is a very unique way to create the piece. For example, In Rash Dash they will start of with the idea of just going over - under - through each other to create a sequence of dance moves. Then they will follow this up by adding meaning and a story to it, in which they then adapt the speed and sharpness of the movements to match this story / meaning.

When it came to me exploring this myself I found it hard to start off with as this was a new experience to me. However, I slowly got the hang of it over time and it became more fun to play with. When we played with this we started with making a sequence of moves just like they do at Rash Dash and then added meaning to it. I started to really enjoy this style of Physical Theatre when we started to play around with the speed as I found it made the piece flow a lot more effectively and impactfully.

Overall, the way in that Rash Dash explore physical theatre is quite a unique way and although its unlike anything that I have explored before I really enjoyed devising in this style

Some examples of their works are as followed :

The ugly sisters 2012
- This was a re telling of Cinderella where they told the real story.

"It may sound a little trite, and of course there have been plenty of feminist makeovers of fairytales, but Rash Dash are definitely on to something as they edge towards a new genre of musical theatre. They revel in the messiness of the psyche and of theatre itself, examine the nature of storytelling, and create two memorable characters whose snarly vulnerability makes you want to both hug them and give them a good slap."

Two Man Show 2016

"We want to talk about masculinity and patriarchy but the words that exist aren’t good enough. So there’s music and dance too. In this Fringe First winning show about gender and language two women play two women playing two men."
